The ‘Liberation Tower’ in Hamminkeln-Blumenkamp will be open to visitors from 10 am on Sunday, 23 March 2025. Admission is free. The small museum displays relics from the war period. On 24 March 1945, hundreds of American cargo gliders landed in the area around the tower and there was heavy fighting between US airborne troops and German defenders. To mark the 80th anniversary of the airborne landing, a number of historic military vehicles will also be on display at the museum tower.
Historian Alexander Berkel will be available for background discussions in the afternoon from 2 pm. He is the author of ‘Krieg vor der eigenen Haustür’ and the new book ‘1945 – Die Front am Niederrhein’. Between 2 and 5 p.m., he will talk about his work and sign books on request. The ‘Liberation Tower’ was created in 2020 in a former transformer tower through the private initiative of Olaf Prinz from Mehrhoog, who has built up a collection on the air landing.
